On Feb. 23, 300 leaders and tastemakers will gather at The Cedar Room to honor Dr. Patrick Flume, Director of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Cystic Fibrosis Center, at the second annual Breath of Life Celebration. Dr. Flume’s dedication to improving the lives of individuals with cystic fibrosis and advancing research in the field has earned him widespread recognition and admiration.
“Dr. Flume isn’t just a doctor, he is the reason that I am alive today”, said Will Cathcart, an adult with cystic fibrosis who was diagnosed with the disease at age 2. “Like all diseases, there neither is, nor will there ever be, a magic bullet for cystic fibrosis. The cure is knowledge, grit and love ... Few have any idea of the breadth of Dr. Flume’s contributions and the breath that he put back into our lungs.”
The gala event will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, auction and entertainment, providing attendees with an opportunity to celebrate Dr. Flume’s achievements while also supporting the ongoing work of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Proceeds from the event will fund critical research and programs aimed at improving the lives of individuals with cystic fibrosis.
In 2022, the Foundation funded $265 million in research and care for people with the disease. Money raised at the local level and hundreds of events nationwide support the CF Foundation’s mission to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives by funding research and drug development, partnering with the CF community, and advancing high-quality, specialized care.
“We invite the community to join us in honoring Dr. Flume and supporting the work of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,” said Cam McLoud, Honorary Breath of Life Co-Chair and Chair Emerita, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Board of Trustees. “Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by this challenging disease and accelerate our path to a cure. I do this in memory of my son Will and for all those impacted by this disease.”
