Charles Leland Ackerman, of Mount Pleasant, left our world to be with his Lord and Savior on February 5, 2018. His final months were surrounded by his family and friends who will miss his humor, smiles, sparkling eyes, and the quick banter that always let you know how much he enjoyed being with others. A celebration and remembrance of his life will be at Hibben United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm Thursday, February 8, 2018. A reception will follow at the Church's Christian Life and Learning Center for all to enjoy. A private burial will be held at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Born on March 17, 1928 in St. George S.C., the son of Clemons E. Ackerman and Virginia Jordan Ackerman, Charles learned early that life was the most enriched when filled with God, family, and fun. Charles graduated from St. George High School and Clemson A&M College (1952) majoring in Economics. His love and enthusiasm for Clemson Tiger Football continued throughout his life. He later served as a Sergeant in the Army Occupation of Korea, and never took for granted the liberties and privileges of being an American. Charles’ loyalty to family and friends also was exemplified through his 30-year career with Westvaco, retiring in 1990. On August 5, 1955, Charles’ life changed forever when he married the “the girl next door”, Alexa Fairey Ackerman. For 62 years, he lent his remarkable strength as needed, a giving heart as a constant, and a humble adoration for his bride with whom he loved to travel and explore. With two beautiful children and two grandchildren, Charles now joins his son in heaven, Charles Ackerman, Jr., who predeceased him at just 15 years old. Also predeceasing Charles were his parents and his brothers Wallace M. Ackerman and CE Ackerman, Jr. One can only guess the reunion this band of boys will share with his mother. Surviving Charles along with his wife are his daughter, Leslie Ackerman Tanner (Dale); and his most treasured grandchildren, Stafford Dale Tanner II, and granddaughter Margaret Tanner Miler (Sherwood) of Beaufort, SC; his brother, J. Linwood Ackerman (Sandra) of Greenville, SC, five nieces and two nephews. From the time of their births, Charles and Alexa were a constant presence in their lives… be it for advice, a refuge, or simply sought-after companionship. Few bonds are as strong. Charles was a member of Hibben United Methodist Church for 58 years, serving on numerous committees and active in the Men’s Club. He was also a member of Mt. Pleasant Jaycees and Charleston Paper Mill Retiree Association, Groves Civic Club. Charles will be remembered lovingly for his kind and gentle spirit. He was as comfortable with children and adults alike - especially anyone that could stand toe-to-toe in series of well-meaning jokes. This spirit carried beyond his family and friends to animals as well, most notably his grand dogs, Lillie, Tanley and Reggie. With a twinkle in his eye and a devilish spirit, friends were always welcome in their home, and a stranger was never for long. The family is grateful to Dr. Rex Morgan and the staff at Palladium Hospice. A very special thanks to his “angel” and family friend, Dr. Jon Donaldson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hibben United Methodist Church, 690 Coleman Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
