In the course of rehabilitating the Ben Sawyer Bridge, SCDOT and FHWA engineers determined it would be best to upgrade the abutment foundations and assure the new bridge's ability to withstand the worst case loading conditions. To upgrade these foundations, crews plan to drive two additional support piles adjacent to the existing piles on both ends of the bridge where the bridge abuts the causeway.
The contractor has submitted their upgrade plans for SCDOT review. Work to make the upgrades is expected to begin by the end of the summer.
The finished surface of asphalt pavement for the Ben Sawyer Bridge Rehabilitation Project will be completed as soon as the abutment upgrades are in place and final slope grading is completed.
