Bodies Full of Magic haven’t been around long. They first played under that name back in February at A Dough Re Mi. Singer/songwriter Corey Webb founded the band (originally The Corey Webb Band) in order to perform his songs but soon realized that a band name change would widen the spotlight to include the amply talented other musicians he played with.

They describe themselves as a unique fusion of piano driven jazz pop and guitar driven folk rock.

Bodies is the joint musical effort of five Charleston musicians who are toiling on the road to musical enlightenment. I have had the pleasure of engineering a great deal of their live shows and can tell you that their view of themselves is on the mark.

Corey and Kristen Abbott handle the vocals and songwriting while Alex Hennessey (keyboards), Brett Nash (drums) and Karen Bliznick (trumpet) use their formidable music skills in helping with the arraignments.

This band definitely has its own style. They’ll be appearing Friday at A Dough Re Mi along with Dewey Muggles. Another band with an original sound, I guess the best way I can describe them is a psychedelic/proggresive rock explosion.

They are energetic, heavy, and intense, sort of a red neck Pink Floyd. Lead guitarist Harry Morse sites Syd Barret (original singer and songwriter for Pink Floyd) as one of his major influences. But don’t take my word for it, check these bands out on the Web and more importantly, go see ‘em live this Friday.

Both of these bands were contestants in the March Madness Battle of The Bands.

They were part of the 24 band roster that battled it out over the month of March.

While Dewey Muggles were eliminated in the preliminary round by Bodies Full of Magic and Bodies themselves eliminated by Tenfifty in the semi-finals, these bands still hooked up to play together. Being the promoter of the event, I can tell you that the judges have told me that this battle was incredibly hard to judge.

The field is now whittled down to three bands, semi-final winners Tenfifty and The Izm battle it out with Cole Train who was the wildcard with the highest score of the non-winners in the two semi-final rounds. The finals will be held Saturday, April 11 at The Village Tavern.

A rising force in the local music scene is Awendaw Green. Masterminded by local dentist Dr. Eddie White, Awendaw Green is a cool, relaxed setting to record.

They also have a weekly show (The Barn Jam) that showcases not only local artists of all genres but touring acts coming through the area as well.
