My visit to Buddy Roe’s Shrimp Shack last Thursday was a lot of fun. My girl Deb and I ran into a good deal of our friends as well as met some new ones.

Instead of chicken wings, they serve shrimp in a variety of flavors. Deb had the ranch and I had the teriyaki. Both were delicious and I’m looking forward to going back to try more of their menu.

Always a fan of early shows, I was delighted when the band started at 8:30 p.m. Often on weekdays, we go out for dinner but leave before the entertainment starts. It’s not that we don’t want to check out the band but we both are busy and have to get up early in the morning. Buddy Roe’s is a good alternative for us because they start the music early.

Rik Cribb and the Problems played a nice mix of tunes including songs by Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and other great artists. In the set they also sprinkled some original songs including one of my favorites “Caroline.” Rik is playing around town a couple of nights a week so check him out when you get a chance.

Friday night, I was at A Dough Re Mi mixing sound for Dewey Muggles. Now, for those of you who don’t know, Dewey Muggles is a local progressive/psychedelic/rock band. Harry Morse (guitar) and Jerry Beale (bass) take turns with the singing and songwriting. Stand out songs include the anti-war song “Baghdaddy” written by Beale based on his own experiences in Operation Dessert Storm and the title song from they’re self-released CD, “Panic Attack.”

Sunday night, my buddy Pat Latimore called me and asked me to fill in for him behind the soundboard at The Village Tavern. Since I didn’t have time to check and see who was playing, I was pleasantly surprised when The Sex Slaves from New York pulled into the parking lot.

 The Sex Slaves combine the best elements of punk, metal, and glam rock to create a sound that is all about a good time.

This Saturday is the Sea Turtle Relief Benefit to aid the sea turtle programs of the Cape Romain NWR and the Sewee Association. This event will be at Awendaw Green and features headliner Webb Wilder..

Hisnew CD debuted No. 1 in his genre and has stayed there.

Appearing as well is Holy Ghost Tent Revival. Eddie White (mastermind behind Awendaw Green) says, “A show that has to be seen to believed. Their energy is infectious!” Also on the bill, The Whisperjets and Jeff Norwood.

Under the heading of shameless self-promotion, on Thursday, July 2, I will be turning 50. This will be the second year that, instead of over-indulging I will be using the occasion to help others.

Last year it was the Caroline Read Benefit for Infant Epilepsy. This year it’s a food drive for East Cooper Meals on Wheels. Instead of a cover charge, you can donate can goods at the door. My band, Allnightkungfu  will be playing along with local sonic pioneers, Flood Empty Lakes. It’s for a good cause and you’ll get a chance to see just how hard the old guy (me) can rock.
