Grant enables Trident Academy students to mentor underprivileged students
Wednesday, October 28, 2009

Trident Academy teachers Robin Greig and Bill Gettys have received a grant that will fund a CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) Bus,  allowing Trident Academy 11th graders to reach out and mentor students at four Title One middle schools in Charleston County. The Armed Forces Communications Electronics Association (AFCEA) surprised the teachers and students with news of the grant earlier this month.

Trident Academy 11th graders are taking a yearlong intensive CSI course. Using the $1000 grant, at the end of the year the Trident Academy students will present hands-on mini lessons to 8th graders at four Title One middle schools in Charleston County. They will also design and lead a mock crime scene scenario (complete with trace evidence, potential suspects, forensic test to perform) for the middle school students to solve in teams. All of the students will end up learning about CSI techniques including fingerprinting, toxicology, blood splatter analysis, fiber and hair analysis and gunshot trajectories.
