Local family gets involved with measles awareness initiative
Wednesday, February 03, 2010
By Helen Ravenel

Mount Pleasant mother Laura James has gotten her family signed up with the local Red Cross, specifically the Measles Initiative.

'It costs less than a dollar for a Measles immunization, and they need it desperately in places such as Haiti, where it can be prevented,' said James.

According to the statistics, the Measles Initiative has supported the vaccination of more than 700 million children in over 60 countries, helping to reduce measles deaths by 78% globally.

James took a two-hour orientation with the Red Cross to learn more about measles. Her husband and son, Kellen, took up a collection with the Cub Scout Pack.

Fourth-grader Kellen got his class at Jennie Moore Elementary involved in the Measles Awareness Initiative.

The class raised $328. They opted to send half to the Measles Initiative in third world countries and the other $164 to Haiti.

No, we do not need town officials babysitting us when it comes to safety.

Not sure, because while it is dangerous, it's not a top concern of mine.

Do you think the Town of Mount Pleasant should research the feasibilty of constructing and maintaining a mooring field.
No, this would put a strain on town resources.

Yes, this could be another source of economic revenue, promoting tourism and relocation.

Possibly, but it should be a shared endeavor between local, county and state governing officials.
