Join the 1200 : Become a Red Cross Disaster Volunteer Printer Friendly Version | 0 comment(s)
Don’t wait for the disaster to strike. The Red Cross wants to train you now for what may happen tomorrow. Thousands of individuals flood local Red Cross offices wanting to help their community when large disasters strike, such as Hurricane Hugo and Katrina. Many may be turned away because the staff needed to train them is already deployed. Join the 1200 is an aggressive local effort to identify and prepare these community minded individuals to be Red Cross Disaster Volunteers, ready to work shelters, drive emergency vehicles and distribute much needed meals and aid into their communities. The goal is to have at least 1200 volunteers to cover the needs of our seven county area. Your local Red Cross chapters have prepared a convenient one day training that will earn you the distinction of being a Red Cross Disaster Volunteer and a unique number in the 1200. We are offering the first Join the 1200 training from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Aug. 30, in four locations: Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in North Charleston, The VA Victory House in Walterboro, Santee-Cooper in Moncks Corner and Dorchester Presbyterian Church in Summerville. A background check is required for all Red Cross volunteers. To sign up for the training or to be on the list for future trainings, visit www.lowcountryredcross.org and click on Join the 1200. You can also contact Lisa Miller-Wills, director of Volunteer and Youth Services at (843)764-2323 Ext. 364, willsli@usa.redcross.org.
