Books and Crooks take center stage in Mt. Pleasant at the first Book 'Em Book Signing event hosted by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office and the Charleston County School District.
The Charleston Crime Stoppers, Mount Pleasant Police Department, Charleston County Literacy Group and the Wando Community Education groups are sponsoring the annual Book 'Em event, and are actively seeking authors who wish to participate in signings and readings. The event will be from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24 at Wando High School.
Book 'Em is a book fair that started in Waynesboro, Virginia in 2004. Book 'Em is open to authors of all genres. The goal is to increase awareness of the correlation between high illiteracy rates and high crime rates and to raise funds for increasing literacy and combating crime.
Book 'Em currently has about 30 confirmed authors who have registered to participate in Book 'Em Charleston.
The slogan for the event is "Buy a Book and Stop a Crook". There will be no admission charge and proceeds from the sale of books will be used to help promote literacy and fight crime.
For authors who are unable to attend but wish to provide books or giveaway items, those will be appreciated as well.
