Anderson holds on for win at the Carolinas PGA Section Professional Championship Printer Friendly Version | 0 comment(s)
Billy Anderson, head PGA professional at Eagle Point Golf Club (Wilmington, N.C.) didn’t necessarily make it look easy as he battled his way to a win at the Carolinas PGA Section Professional Championship at Daniel Island Club’s Ralston Creek course. Anderson faced the only competitor he’d been able to shut out all week – himself. Though he struggled throughout the final round carding nine bogies, one double and just three birdies, he managed to hold off the defending champion Curt ‘Colonel’ Sanders, his assistant professional at Eagle Point Golf Club. He finished with scores of 66-69-79-214 (-2). Sanders made four birdies but also countered those with two bogies and two doubles on the day carding a three day score of 73-68-74-215 (-1) and a second place finish. Gregory Beavan of Daniel Island finished tied for 7th at 5-over. His scorecard looked as follows: 67-81-73--221 +5. With the win, Anderson met his goal of making it to the Professional National Championship and then some. He also takes home a check for $8,000 and his choice of playing in the Wyndham or Wachovia Championships next year. Though Sanders could not overcome the deficit to repeat as champion, with his second place finish he earned 190.00 player of the year points to finish the year with 459.50, finally taking the Bob Boyd Player of the Year title away from Kelly Mitchum who has held it for the past four years. Mitchum finished this tournament season with one win at the Carolinas PGA Assistants Championship and a tie for 4th place at the North Carolina Open. Twelve players including Anderson and excluding already exempt Sanders also move on to play in the PGA Professional National Championship. The Professional National Championship is like the PGA Championship for Club Professionals, pitting the best club professionals in the country against one another in a 72-hole stroke play tournament. The top 20 finishers at the National Championship earn the right to compete against the top 130 Tour players in the world at the PGA Championship in 2009. The Carolinas PGA Section would like to thank Greg Keating, PGA, his staff and the members at Daniel Island Club for their continued support of the most championship.
