Benefit to fund rising tennis star’s dream of professional circuit Printer Friendly Version | 0 comment(s)
The Rockin’ for Ryan Gala, which will be held Thursday, Nov. 6 at the Sand Dunes Club on Sullivan’s Island will benefit Charleston’s own Ryan Young. Young is a West Ashley native who is chasing his dream of making it on the professional tennis tour. His mom, Toni, is the tennis pro at Maybank Tennis Center and has taught many local athletes. His dad, Jeff, suffered a massive stroke about a year ago and although doing very well, is still in a position where he is unable to work. Despite the financial and emotional hardship, this family remains upbeat, positive and a tremendous testament to love being able to pull you through. Ryan’s quest for the tour is an extremely expensive one and one that he is solely responsible for. Proceeds from this fundraiser will help him with the tremendous expense of the tour. This Clemson tennis star has made great strides in the world of professional tennis. This is a story about dreams. About overcoming unbelievable competition. About facing sudden, life changing and uncontrollable events. This is a story about a family’s love and fortitude — and about community coming together to lift up one of their own. Unlike most paths to the pros, the quest to the ATP is not paved with the grease of a pro team’s financial support. Ryan has learned that the hard way, shouldering the tremendous expense of travel, lodging, food, training and all other related expenses of life on the professional tennis circuit with his own racket. He also carries the worry over the family he leaves at home. Despite this tremendous financial and emotional burden, in only six short months, Ryan has climbed to a ranking of 677 in the world. The secret to his success? His own strength and determination coupled with the love and support of his family and friends. Ryan, 23 has been playing tennis since the age of 4. He began tournament play by the age of 6. By the age of 12 he was ranked No.1 in the state and No. 2 in the South. He has been breaking records and winning awards ever since. He holds to this day what is considered an unbreakable record at the Palmetto Championships in Belton, S.C. Ryan is currently ranked 49th overall of players from the U.S. and is moving up as he gains more points internationally. He was awarded a tennis scholarship to Clemson where he played for four years under renowned Coach Chuck Kriese, winning ACC titles and an exclusive place on the Clemson Century Club. He is one of only 12 men in the history of Clemson tennis to have over 100 wins during their four years. Rockin’ for Ryan a night of dinner, dancing and delight will be held from 6-9 p.m., with all proceeds going to support Ryan. There are three ways to purchase tickets. No actual tickets will be sent - there will be a “will call” list at the door.
