The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has selected Brenda Carter of Charleston to be a member of the U.S. Alice Marble Cup Team for women 60 and over. Carter will compete with her team in this year’s international team competition on the red clay courts in Antalya, Turkey, Oct 12-18. In the 2007 Marble Cup competition held in Christ Church, New Zealand, the US took the bronze medal. Carter, a captain, is a member of a four woman team selected by the USTA from the best American players in her age division. Her teammates include Molly Hahn, Belmont, Mass., Betty Wachob, Panama City, Fla., and Patricia Keleman, Bethlehem, Pa. This event is sponsored annually by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and all member nations are eligible to field teams. In 2007 Carter won the world 60’s singles title and was the finalist in the doubles. She is currently the No. 1 ranked singles player in the United States (60 and over) and No. 1 in doubles with teammate Betty Wachob. Her 2007 National singles titles include the outdoor hard court, indoor, and clay court, as well as finalist on the grass. Her doubles titles include outdoor hard, grass and clay. In 2004, she was inducted into the Georgia Southern Athletic Hall of Fame. She has been named the Adult Tennis Player of the Year by both the Southern Section of the USTA (2003) and by the South Carolina Tennis Association (2001 and 2006). She currently resides in Charleston with her husband, Harry.
