The swim portion of the event was a 0.6-mile ocean swim that ran parallel to the shoreline, ending at the Isle of Palms County Park.  Athletes had to contend with three to four-foot waves caused by a strong offshore weather front Sunday morning.  The 16-mile bike segment traveled from the park onto the Isle of Palms Connector and onto Hungryneck Boulevard in Mount Pleasant, then onto Palm Boulevard across Breach Inlet to Sullivan’s Island. The four-mile run course took triathletes back over the Isle of Palms Connector to the finish line at the The Shoppes at Seaside Farms in Mount Pleasant.

The overall winner of the event was James Vavra, a Daniel Island resident.

Vavra finished second in the swim leg of the triathlon, afterward calling the ocean “gnarly,” but a good test of ocean swimming. He took the lead during the bike segment and pulled away to victory with a time of 22:47 for the four-mile run and a cumulative finish time of 1:18:56 for all three legs of the race.
