The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department announced that registration is now open for this fall’s Basketball Academy and Volleyball Academy. Now in its seventh session spanning three years, the Basketball Academy is instructed by two of the area’s most prominent basketball professionals, Debbie Antonelli and Flash Kinloch. The academy is a four-week series of instructional sessions that offer players ages 9-16 the opportunity to learn and improve their basketball skills in a fun environment. Registration for the first session of the program is $50 for Mount Pleasant residents and is available through Sept. 5. Session I will meet on Sept. 9, 11, 16 and 18. Registration for Session II begins Sept. 15, and meets on Oct. 7, 9, 14 and 16. All instructional meets run from 6 -7:30 p.m. Antonelli and Kinloch bring long records as both players and coaches to the MPRD academy program. Antonelli was a three-year starter at North Carolina State University who played in four NCAA tournaments and went on to coach college basketball. Antonelli has over 20 years of experience in both college and professional basketball broadcasting for major networks such as ESPN and CBS Sports, as well as 20 years experience teaching basketball at all levels, including WNBA and high school All-Americans. She was lead television analyst for Indiana Fever of the WNBA and is currently on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. She also has experience as a motivational and team building speaker. Kinloch, a former SC All-State Basketball player and 4-year letter player at North Carolina A&T University, is a speed agility trainer and personal team sports coach. Kinloch has also had years of experience working with football and basketball players of all ages, ranging from high school teams up to professional teams. The instructional program will focus on developing basic skills, including shooting techniques, passing, rebounding, on-the-ball defense along with scoring skills and speed-power-agility training, in a fun atmosphere. Individualized basketball training plans will be prepared for players who want to raise their level of play. “The academy offers a structured, fun and non-competitive environment that allows players the opportunity to really learn the basic fundamentals of basketball,” Kinloch said. Registration fees are $50 per session for Mount Pleasant residents ($45 for second child in the same family, residents only) and $62 for non-residents. Participants should be between the ages of 9 and 16, with girls’ age requirements as of Jan. 1, 2009 and boys’ age requirements as of Sept. 1, 2009. The Volleyball Academy, will accept registration through Sept. 15, with sessions held on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Park West gym beginning Sept. 15. The program is offered for 6th-10th graders, with sessions held for 6th-7th graders from 5:30-7 p.m. and for 8th-10th graders from 7-8:30 p.m. The Volleyball Academy provides players with the opportunity to improve and practice volleyball skills based on age. The Volleyball Academy is a five-week program with sessions taking place on Monday and Wednesday nights through Oct. 13. Registration fees are $38 for residents ($33 for second child in the same family, residents only) and $76 for non-residents.
