Warriors open season with rout
Monday, August 30, 2010

Wando's season-opening rout of Ridge View was exactly what Warriors coach Jimmy Noonan wanted to see -- a strong team effort.

"We came out and controlled the ball offensively and played some good, hard-nosed defense," Noonan said after his team's 31-0 victory Friday night. "Tonight I think we won the conditioning battle. That was evident. That gives credibility to our offseason."

After a scoreless first quarter, Wando kicker Brandon Burkholder hit a 39-yard field goal to give Wando a 3-0 lead. After a long drive that included runs of 22 and 14 yards by quarterback Sam Norton, the Warriors scored when Alex Glover ran 31 yards for a touchdown.

After a near-interception and a sack for a loss of five yards, Wando had the ball on Ridge View's 22-yard line when running back Dezmon Venning threaded a hole in the Blazers defense for a touchdown run, putting Wando up 17-0. The Warriors ended a Ridge View threat just before halftime when Precise Manigault intercepted a long pass near the end zone.

Ryan Turnage replaced Norton in the third quarter for Wando after Norton was injured on a facemask penalty. Later in the third quarter, after an encroachment penalty gave Wando a first down, Tony Bailem ran for six yards, and Isaac German broke several tackles for a 7-yard touchdown run to put Wando up 24-0.

In the fourth quarter, Alec Westerman picked up a Ridge View fumble and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown.

Late in the final quarter, a Ridge View field goal attempt hit the left upright, preserving Wando's shutout. The Warriors' defense held Ridge View to just 118 yards.

Noonan was pleased with his team's performance, but said the Warriors must keep things in persepective.

"We've been on the other side too many times to enjoy this for too long," he said.
