The weekly word from Captain Magwood Printer Friendly Version | 0 comment(s)
Last Wednesday was a phenomenal day for the Winds of Fortune. Her crew brought in 2,800 pounds of brown shrimp in a mere four and a half hours.
Captain Magwood said that locals have been snapping up his shrimp. “We do appreciate our local customers, they’ve kept us in business since 1972,” he said.
Magwood claims he’s seen more porpoises than he ever has before and thinks this might explain the abundant shark population that plagued his nets earlier this season. He expects the season will continue to get better and will be going full boar by October. “When the days get shorter, the shrimp get bigger,” he said.
He and the crew are also looking forward to the shorter days bringing a sunset on the water before the Winds of Fortune is docked at night.
Sorry, but I have to
The Charleston area’s inlets and creeks are full of oyster beds, sandbars and rocks. On any given day, the Winds of Fortune is dragging $5000 worth of equipment behind her. Dragging nets over sharp objects or bumping a hull on the bottom causes costly repairs so Magwood does his best to steer his ship clear of the dangers that lurk in shallow waters. The Winds of Fortune is a large ship that requires a wide birth and there aren’t any brakes on a boat. Magwood would like to apologize if he’s come close to knocking you off your fishing/leisure boat, but asks that if you see him coming you’ll give him some space. He doesn’t want to knock you overboard, but he’ll damage his equipment if he tries to go around you in shallower water.
Next week: A super secret shrimp recipe and another update from Captain Magwood!
