Mayor John Tecklenburg delivered a proclamation on Tuesday declaring Nov. 20, 2016 to be Bishop England High School Volleyball Day in the City of Charleston.

Bishop England, already the national record holder in total state titles, set another national mark last month by winning its 17th consecutive state championship. The Lady Bishops shut out Camden, 3-0, in the AAA title game to complete an unblemished 15-set run through the 2016 postseason.

“The 2016 Varsity Volleyball team at Bishop England High School has shown dedication, discipline, and teamwork to accomplish their goals and to lead their school to victory,” Tecklenberg read before the team Tuesday at City Hall. “I … encourage all citizens of the Holy City to celebrate the achievements of these young players, their coaching staff, their families that have supported them, and the Bishop England High School community.”

Bishop England broke the previous national mark for consecutive titles set by Cade Episcopla School of Acadiana (La.) from 1987-2002. The Bishops' historic run dates back to 2000 and includes hundreds of players, two head coaches, two state classifications and title wins over 13 different schools.

The Bishops now have 12 more total state titles than the next closest in the state and three more than the next closest in the nation.

Bishops current head coach Cindy Baggott moves into second place on the state’s all-time list for most championships won by a coach, trailing only Dorman’s Paula Kirkland, who won her 12th this season. Baggott has amassed 286 total wins since taking over as head coach 10 years ago.

Amelia Dawley is tied for third on the state’s all-time championship list, winning nine titles at Bishop England from 1994-2006. Kathy Blackman ranks fourth, winning seven at BE from 1977-1990. Beth Lewis also led the Bishops to a state title in 1993.
