Charleston has landed its first-ever bid to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships.

United Soccer Academy Mount Pleasant 2003 Boys Premier won the U.S. Soccer Region III championship late last month in Greensboro, N.C. to earn its berth into the national tournament beginning July 25 in Frisco, Texas.

The South Carolina state cup champions went 2-1 in pool play at regionals before shutting out Florida Elite Soccer Academy and Baton Rouge in the quarter and semifinals, respectively. Ted van Thullenar’s goals were the difference in both of the one-score shutouts.

USAMP knocked off Tennessee SC 2003 Showcase, 3-1, in the regional championship game after recovering from an early own goal with two scores from Lance Friedrich and one from Chase Kennedy. Friedrich finished the tournament with a team-high five goals — fourth-best in the 16-team, 11-state showcase.
