Whirlin

The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) is adding new excitement to Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark in North Charleston. The new Rip Tide Run slide is now open.

This summer, area waterpark-enthusiasts will be able to compete on the new and improved Rip Tide Run multi-lane mat racer slide. The 45-foot-high, six-lane slide glides riders over slopes as it propels them to the finish line. Individuals are invited to race down the slide side-by-side with other riders.

The slide, which is over four stories tall, will accommodate 150 guests per lane per hour. Riders use a special flotation mat to go down the slide head-first. It also features a new Launch Logic timing system, which helps maintain a smooth flow of riders with red light/green light starting block control features, as well as finish line sensors that display the riders’ actual time on digital clocks. The slide was manufactured and installed by WhiteWater: The Original Waterpark and Attractions Company and replaced the original Rip Tide Run slide.

Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark, located at 8888 University Boulevard in North Charleston, also features a 27,000 square-foot, 1,000,000 gallon wave pool; a multi-slide complex with three different enclosed and open tube sections; the Big Splash Tree House, featuring 66 interactive play elements and a giant dumping bucket; and an 870-foot lazy river. The waterpark also offers a full range of amenities including concessions, lockers for securing items, lounge chairs, showers and restrooms, and trained lifeguards to provide a safe experience.

The park is open daily from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., now through Aug. 14, and weekends only Aug. 15 through Labor Day.

“With the new version of the Rip Tide Run multi-lane mat racer slider, we are now able to offer our park visitors an adrenaline rush as they speed down the new ultramarine blue and zinc yellow slide to the black and white checkered finish line,” said Andy Hammill, Assistant Director of Capital Projects for CCPRC. “Our supportive community makes it possible for the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission to offer numerous recreational opportunities like these and many others throughout our park system.”

Other CCPRC waterparks include Splash Zone Waterpark, located within James Island County Park, and Splash Island Waterpark at Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands County Park.
