Woman celebrates 101st birthday with RiverDogs

Zilah Powell, a Mount Pleasant resident at Somerby Assisted Living, recently celebrated her 101st birthday and her third RiverDogs birthday celebration. Unfortunately, she was not able to cheer the RiverDogs hard enough, as they lost in the 15th inning to Greenville, 5 to 2.

Zilah has had a lifelong love of baseball, as her father, Seymour “Hooks” Bailey, was a left-handed pitcher for Montreal, Canada, in 1928, and was signed to the St. Louis Cardinals before he fell and broke his arm. He was elected as a member of the Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame, remembered the days of Babe Ruth and could spin great baseball tales before his death in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 89.
