The first Spirit Airlines flight at Charleston International touched down April 5, 2023.

Lowcountry travelers will soon have a second option to fly between the Holy City and the Motor City without changing planes.

Spirit Airlines announced May 1 that it is launching a nonstop flight from Charleston International to Detroit Metro starting July 10. The service will be offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Tickets range from $49 to $159 during the first week, according to the Florida-based airline's website.

The new route reflects the “continued growth and support” of Charleston travelers, according to John Kirby, vice president of network planning at Spirit.

It's the third new city pairing the low-cost carrier has added to its local schedule this year, following New York and Boston.

“Spirit Airlines continues to deliver on its promise to meet our community's needs with affordable, direct service to some of the most in-demand destinations," said Elliott Summey, Charleston International's CEO.

Spirit expanded to the airport about a year ago. Its other nonstop destinations are Newark, N.J. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Spirit Airlines is adding another nonstop flight to its lineup at Charleston International Airport.

Helen Hill, CEO of Explore Charleston and chair of the Charleston County Aviation Authority, said Spirit has been “extremely successful” in its first year operating at CHS.

“This new route signals Spirit’s continued confidence in our region,” she said.

The Detroit service flight will compete directly for local travelers with a daily nonstop operated by Delta Air Lines.

The Michigan metropolis' main airport handles nearly 37 million passengers annually and offers 1,100 daily flights to 140 destinations between four continents.
