On Friday, March 30, the students of Wando High School’s Dream Club (Jayla Moss, Imani Weston, and Madison Grant) and their sponsor, Shirley Verma, partnered with members of the Wando High Step Team (Symira Richardson, Savannah Wright, Bria Maiden, and Alaysha Barnes) and Miss Wando 2018, Faith Mitchell, to visit Mount Pleasant Manor and spend time with the senior residents. Although there were simply plans to provide the seniors with Easter baskets and spread a little cheer to mark the season, much more came from the occasion as they were exuberantly welcomed by the director of activities, Marva Bland, along with other staff members. In heightened spirits, the students and seniors were able to take advantage of this opportunity to fully enjoy each other’s company.

While the students were able to display some of their talents through a small step show and gospel singing, the residents were not to be outdone as they joined in a sing-along of hymns, and one member shared some of her own dance moves. As the activity hour at Mount Pleasant Manor came to a close and everyone proceeded to return to their normal routines, the young visitors and senior residents left with a greater sense of warmth and happiness than they could have hoped from their meeting, especially one resident who stated, “This is so sweet… makes me feel like a little child again.”

Through this gesture and the time the Wando High students and manor residents were able to spend together on Good Friday, the message of Jesus Christ’s care and inclusion of everyone marked how friendship transcends generations.
