CLEMSON — A Clemson University student succumbed to injuries after a weekend car crash.

Caroline Deer, 20, of Mount Pleasant, was thrown from her car around 12:35 a.m. April 13 after striking a fence south of campus on Old Stone Church Road, according to the Pickens County Coroner’s Office.

Deer’s car overturned off the road near the LaMaster Dairy Center. She was heading toward campus when she may have overcorrected, Clemson City Police Cpt. Matt Culbreath told The Post and Courier.

Deer was not wearing a seatbelt, the coroner’s office said. When EMS arrived, she was treated on the scene and brought by helicopter to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The senior genetics major later died April 14.

Another passenger in the car, who has not been identified, received minor injuries and has since been released from the hospital, the coroner’s office said.

Deer attended Wando High School and most recently worked part time as a pharmacy technician at a local CVS Pharmacy, according to her social media pages.

In fall 2023, she was placed on Clemson’s dean’s list for having a GPA greater than 3.5.

The university sent out a campus safety alert about the crash around 1 a.m., telling students to avoid the area of Old Stone Church Road and Ridgecrest Drive. The alert was canceled just before 3:30 a.m.

Additional details about what led up to the crash were not available April 14. The Clemson City Police and Pickens County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
