A former accountant’s quest to pave the way for top quality jewelry at affordable prices recently led Laura Cohen to shelve her calculator and No. 2 pencils in favor of opening her own business. And starting next month, the necklace and earring designer will open her own Charleston-based shop, Little Bird, specializing in coastal-themed gemstones and bijouterie at 90 Queen St.

The one-time Colorado resident drew inspiration from living in the Rocky Mountain region, as well as surfing on Folly Beach and sojourning on an assortment of tropical island destinations.

Through her travels, Cohen came to the realization that stones can help evoke a range of sentiments, including peace, prosperity and a sense of protection. Additionally, she poured he creative abilities into manufacturing tarnish-proof pieces that can be worn at the beach or in the gym.

Through her efforts in collecting rare stones from more than 100 artisans and collectors nationwide, Cohen uses these gems to handcraft individual accessory pieces.
