01) SC school assessments

The South Carolina Department of Education’s (SCDOE) recent release of 2022-23 school year assessment elicited positive feedback from State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver, who was pleased with student reading markers.

“Reading is the foundation of our learning. For the first time in recent history, at least half of our students in each grade level tested as proficient in English Language Arts (ELA),” commented Weaver in relation to results for the the South Carolina College-and Career-Ready Assessments (SC READY).

Seven Mount Pleasant-based elementary schools surpassed the average state totals of students who have met or exceeded expectations in ELA and math (as part of SC READY). Likewise, those same seven education venues have eclipsed the average state totals of students who have met or exceeded state standards in science in SCPASS assessments.

The SC READY program requires students from grades third through eighth to take its assessments except for those who qualify for the South Carolina National Center and State Collaborative (SC-NCSC). Nearly 54 percent of third through eighth-graders met or exceeded expectations in ELA on state assessments during the 2022-23 school year, a 42 percent increase from 2020-21. On math assessments, 41 percent of students in South Carolina met or exceeded expectations, a 39 percent rise from the year prior.

The state totals in SCPASS — administered to grades fourth through sixth — showed 45 percent of tested individuals who met or exceeded state standards in 2022-23, representing a slight drop-off from the previous academic year (46 percent).
