Wild Dunes Director of Golf Jeff Minton talked shop at the latest Isle of Palms Chamber of Commerce meeting.

About a decade following the renovation of the Links Golf Course at Wild Dunes Resorts comes a full refashioning of its sister site, Harbor Golf Course, as detailed by the beachfront retreat’s Director of Golf Jeff Minton.

While visiting with the Isle of Palms Chamber of Commerce at the group’s March 26 public meeting, Minton reported that the Harbor venue will be open throughout 2024, as the redesign will kick off in the new year.

From March through November, in fact, the 39-year-old course will undergo building and irrigation infrastructure renovations, with the installation of new greens also being part of the undertaking.

The constant pattern mowing of grass over time has decreased the greens dimensions from 120,000 square feet to 60,000 square feet, said Minton.

“So, part of the renovation is going to be enlarge and go back to the original footprint. So, the course will be a lot more playable, a lot more fun. And just the whole way golf courses are designed is different now,” added the guest speaker.

As for current golfing at the Isle of Palms resort area, Minton stated that both courses are open to non-members, who will need to reserve space about 14 days ahead. Tennis, swimming and other activities, however, are for members only.

In addition, Minton reminded Chamber members that the Men’s Golf Association will be hosting its annual prostate cancer fundraiser on May 11 at Wild Dunes. The event, he noted, is biggest of its kind in the country.

While the golf portion of the charity gathering is sold out, sponsorships are currently available.

As for the popularity of the sport, Minton shared that a robust 80,000 rounds were played at both courses in 2023. On that note, he was encouraged by the number of new players teeing up at TopGolf locations, reasoning that many of those individuals will soon cross over to real golf.
