On Feb. 28, after submitting their initial letter of intent and initial funding check to The Citadel, the Marion Marauders Society’s “Swamp Fox” Scholarship was officially established.
The recipient of the scholarship, which will be awarded annually, will be chosen by The Citadel administration using the criteria established by the society. The scholarship amount will be $500 per annum commencing with the 2018 fall semester (September through May). Increases in scholarship amount are anticipated in the future. The qualifying criteria is as follows:
- A second-year (sophomore) cadet currently enrolled in the Simoustanous Membership Program (SMP).
- Priority consideration given to SMP cadet enlisted in any unit within the 1st Battalion 118th Infantry, South Carolina Army National Guard.
- Second priority given to SMP cadet enlisted in any other unit within the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, South Carolina Army National Guard.
- Third priority given to SMP cadet enlisted in any unit within the South Carolina Army National Guard.
The Simoustanous Membership Program (SMP) is a program whereby the individual is enlisted in a unit of the South Carolina Army National Guard and will be, upon graduation, commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant (2LT) within that unit.
"We started this scholarship in hopes of having a positive influence in the future command leadership of the South Carolina Army National Guard. Our entire Society is comprised of individuals who honorably served over 1,400 years in the SCARNG," said SGM (Ret) Cecil Evans, president of the society.
