The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) provided an update on the repair plans for the I-526 Wando Bridges at a news conference held in Charleston on January 25, following the emergency closure of the westbound lanes in May 2018. Those plans included advertising for a construction contract which would address many of the recommendations that resulted from the investigation of that closure. SCDOT announces that the contract has been successfully awarded and work is expected to begin in June.
Much of the work will occur within the bridge’s interior. However, the traveling public will begin seeing signage, barrier walls and other evidence of construction activities. The barrier wall will be utilized to establish safe working areas on the top of each bridge within the limits of the Truck Climbing lanes. These truck climbing lanes will be closed during construction.
As described in January, SCDOT expects up to six weekends where one or more lanes will be closed starting late Friday evening and reopening early Monday morning before rush-hour. As the dates for each of these closures are finalized that information will be made public so that motorists can make plans.
SCDOT appreciates the patience of the Charleston community and apologizes for any inconveniences you may experience as this necessary work progresses.
