Talking about guns is hard. For one thing, developing an informed opinion about such a controversial subject takes work. Newspaper headlines this year alone have pendulated between announcing the latest violent incidents and announcing declines in mass shootings. If that makes you dizzy, you might stop and take a look around you instead. What do you see – guns as peacemakers, peace-breakers or something different altogether?

And forming an opinion is just the beginning. Afterwards, you’re charged with sharing it and listening to others’ thoughts on the matter.

Whether or not you’ve decided on how you view guns, you are invited to join others in the community to discuss your personal stories involving guns. On Wednesday, Aug. 7 from 3-4 p.m. a Living Room Conversation about Guns and Responsibility will be held at the Mount Pleasant Regional Library. During this discussion, participants will reflect on the roles guns have played in their lives, where and what they learned about guns, the personal significance of the Second Amendment and current gun laws and regulations.

Living Room Conversations is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 that is committed to bringing together people with differing perspectives, to find common ground. In the current times’ tendency towards extreme, clashing points of view, these discussions are a chance to practice civil discourse and actively listen to and empathize with each other. As a participant, you are encouraged to bring a friend, family member or acquaintance whose perspective differs from your own.

Registration is strongly encouraged, as a few starter materials will be emailed the week before this event. To register or to receive more information, please call 843-849-6161 or visit the reference desk at the Mount Pleasant Regional Library.
