Over the weekend, East Cooper Meals on Wheels (ECMOW) held their seventh annual Oyster Roast at Palmetto Islands County Park on Needlerush Parkway in Mount Pleasant.

The ticketed event raised funds toward providing daily nutrition to homebound residents within ECMOW's service area, including: Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, Cainhoy and Wando areas.

Participants enjoyed live music from The Shakin Martinis Band while shucking oysters. The oysters were provided by Mount Pleasant Seafood. Hot dogs, beer, wine and soft drinks are also included in the ticket price.

"For us it's a good chance to meet with the community and spread the word that it's not just for the elderly or those in poverty, it's for anyone who's homebound," said ECMOW president and CEO George Roberts.

Roberts said ECMOW reached its goal of $1 million from 2019 fundraising events. He estimated the Oyster Roast will raise between $15,000 and $20,000.

In 2019, ECMOW served approximately 170,000 residents in the East Cooper area, according to Roberts.
