Despite the inclement weather on Saturday, Oct. 5, the Isle of Palms Exchange Club held its 27th annual Isle of Palms Connector Run & Walk for the Child 5K.

The National Exchange Club's mission is to raise awareness for the prevention of child abuse. Since the run's inception it has donated more than $1 million to local nonprofits working to heal harmed children and families.

Saturday's race featured more than 1,000 participants, precisely 1,166 crossed the finish line out of the 1,200 registered. The race generated more than $67,000 in donations which will be dispersed among the following area non-profit child abuse prevention organizations:

  • CAPA of Beaufort (Child Abuse Prevention Association)
  • Carolina Youth Development Center
  • Darkness To Light
  • Dee Norton Center
  • Florence Creighton Programs
  • HALOS
  • Lowcountry Orphan Relief
  • Windwood Farms

Isle of Palms and Mount Pleasant will also receive a share of the proceeds for helping facilitate the event.
