Bishops graduate Wilson wins Palmetto Amateur

Bishop England graduate Jamie Wilson won the 44th Palmetto Amateur last Saturday at historic Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken.

The South Carolina Gamecocks rising junior shot a 3-under-par 68 in the final round to force a two-hole playoff against Evan Brown of Loyola (Maryland).

Wilson made a 10-foot par save on the first playoff hole, the par-3 16th, to keep it going. At the par-4 17th hole, he sunk a 15-foot birdie putt to earn a leg up. Brown then missed an 8-footer for birdie to give Wilson the championship.

“It really hasn’t sunk in yet, but it will,” Wilson said. “It’s very special to me.”

Wilson was steady from start to finish at Palmetto Golf Club finishing with a final 72-hole total of 276 (-8) that featured rounds of 67, 73, 68 and 68.

He entered the final round in fifth place before sinking four birdies and an eagle to climb into contention.
