Bishop England scored two runs in the seventh inning of a 3-2 win over Crescent in the opening game of the Class AAA state championship series Saturday in Iva.
The two-time defending state champion Bishops will host Crescent in the second game of the best-of-three title series Tuesday at Father Kelly Field on Daniel Island.
Bishop England trailed 2-1 in the seventh before Corey Cochran evened the game with an RBI single that scored Will Daniel. The Bishops were down to their final out when Scrappy Anderson drove the first pitch he saw to left field to bring in Cochran for the go-ahead run.
Drew Pernell led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. He stole second before Bryant Fort popped out in the next at-bat and then moved to third on a ground ball from Jake Davis. Dawson Merk grounded out to first base two pitches later to end the game.
Junior right-hander Adam Salmorin went all seven innings on the mound for Bishop England, allowing two earned runs off four hits and five walks with one strikeout.
Crescent senior lefty Jarrett Oakes also went seven innings, allowing three runs, one earned, off seven hits and three walks.
Merk put Crescent ahead in the first inning with a single to center to score Pernell.
Chris Dengler drove in John Regan with a single to left field that tied the game in the third inning.
Crescent pulled back ahead in the fourth as Trevor Kelly scored Will McClellan with a sacrifice fly to right field.
