Four seats on Mount Pleasant’s Town Council, the governing body of one of the fastest-growing municipalities in South Carolina, are up for election this fall. Eight individuals filed for office for the race, with three current Council members seeking re-election. Residents are guaranteed to elect at least one new face on Town Council this November, as current Councilwoman Brenda Corley did not file for re-election.

Daniel Brownstein

Brownstein works as the marketing director at the law firm Rogers, Patrick, Westbrook & Brickman in Mount Pleasant. Previously he worked as communications director for the Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Beaufort, SC, and as a newspaper reporter who covered police, courts and local governments. Brownstein served on the Charleston County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and spent five years as a board member for the nonprofit South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (See inside for additional Brownstein coverage). 

Howard Chapman (incumbent)

Chapman was first elected to Town Council in November 2019. On Council, he serves as the Chairman of the Public Services Committee. Chapman is a registered professional engineer in South Carolina and Florida and previously served as a traffic engineer for the Town, as well as a member of the Planning Commission.

Mark Flannery

Flannery is an elementary teacher at Liberty Hill Academy in North Charleston. He earned his Bachelor of Science in French and Psychology from Northern Arizona University and is certified by the state of South Carolina to teach French, elementary education and middle school math.

Laura Hyatt (incumbent)

Hyatt was first elected to Town Council in November 2019. She serves as the Chair of the Economic Development and Health, Recreation and Events Committees. Hyatt is a Mount Pleasant native who graduated from Wando High School, College of Charleston and from the Medical University of South Carolina with a degree in pharmacy.

Jake Rambo (incumbent)

Rambo was first elected to Town Council in November 2019. He serves as the Chair of the Finance Committee and Water Supply and Resource Committee. Rambo is a Commissioner for Mount Pleasant Waterworks, as well. Previously, he worked as a teacher and principal in the Charleston County School District.

Perry Rourk

Rourk serves as the Chair and represents the Community Events seat on the Town’s Recreation Advisory Committee. After graduating from the College of Charleston, Rourk began working for a Mount Pleasant-based firm providing support services to shipping lines calling on the Port of Charleston. He is the CEO of ECIG Charleston, a vape supply retailer with several locations throughout the Lowcountry. Rourk also owns other businesses, including rental property outside of Mount Pleasant and a Christmas tree lot.

Shari Sebuck

Sebuck is taking another shot at a seat on Town Council after an unsuccessful run in 2021. Her professional background includes experience in marketing, public relations, project management, corporate training and small business ownership. She was the Chair of the School Improvement Council (SIC) for both Jennie Moore Elementary and Laing Middle School of Science and Technology from 2010 to 2018 and previously served on the State SIC Board of Trustees.

Mike Tinkey

Tinkey is the owner of TinkeyWorks, a hospitality, golf, tennis and sports consultancy, since 2015. He is also a general partner for Tinkey Timberlands, a multigenerational timber, land management and real estate family business.

Mount Pleasant Town Council is made up of eight council members and the mayor. Councilmembers are elected at-large, rather than for specific districts, and serve four-year terms.

Election Day is Nov. 7. There is no length of residency requirement in South Carolina to register to vote, but voters must register at least 30 days before any election to vote in that election, according to the South Carolina Election Commission.
